Family therapy

Family therapy comes in a number of different forms. The most common is Family Systems Therapy. This approach views all problems as being related in some way to the family as a whole, rather than one individual member of the family. Structural Family Therapy assesses and works with the structure of the family, such as the hierarchies in the husband-wife and parent-child relationships, as well as the emotional distance/connection between family members. Other family therapy models include cognitive, behavioral and supportive approaches to treating family issues. Family therapy may consist of all family members being present or just some; different sessions may also have different family members present. Initially sessions are held weekly, but may decrease in frequency as progress is made.

Individual therapy

Individual therapy consists of a one on one meeting between a client and a therapist. Sessions last approximately 45-50 minutes. During this time the client and therapist work collaboratively toward making changes in a desired way. Changes may include improving an individual’s well being, resolve or mitigate troublesome behaviors, beliefs, compulsions, thoughts, or emotions, and to improve relationships and social skills . Clients are often encouraged to learn new ideas that bring about increased self-awareness and internal resiliency. A therapeutic relationship takes time to develop, and may evolve as the client’s needs.

Group therapy:

A psycho-education and support group that offers middle school children struggling with feeling identification, coping skills for anger, depression, anxiety and school refusal, flexible thinking and social skills. This group encourages children to provide meaningful peer to peer feedback regarding similar issues, as well as empower each other to make positive changes.
